The Great Gatsby

I must warn you now, there will be an extreme photo overload happening.  My mum and I took the first set of photos on Sunday after church because I heard it was going to be a lot cooler the following day when I was going to see Gatsby.  I also wore eyeshadow during the first batch, trying to emulate the 1920s makeup.  Unfortunately, I didn't have black or grey to do a smokey eye and ended up having to use purples.  I didn't really care for the end result.

I am so glad that I found this dress on eBay.  The red flapper dress I made was a bit scandalous length-wise.  I blame the fact that it was a pattern for a Halloween costume.  It's fine if that's what you're going for.  But I wanted something a bit more authentic to the period.  I wanted to look like I stepped out of the 20s and not like a generic Halloween flapper.

My finger waves for once turned out quite well, if I say so myself.  And just in time for going to see the film.

Now below is the second set of photos taken Monday, the day I saw Gatsby, at my usual location of the Conrad Weiser Homestead.  It was more chilly, as it was announced, so I donned my faux fur coat, which I thought went well with the 20s aesthetic.

I took these photos whilst waiting for my friend, Nikkoel to arrive.  I decided I wanted to take some solo at this spot and I also changed my eye makeup so I wanted new photos for that reason as well.  I really liked the way the photos turned out here by the door.  It's like a secret entrance with the way the plants have grown up.

I am my own worst critic when it comes to photos of myself.  But I am absolutely in love with the photo below.  I feel like it turned out so well and I look like a real flapper.  My only complaint would be the plant blocking the view of my legs a bit.

Nikkoel arrived and we had a lot of fun figuring out photos and poses.  It was a bit awkward at first since I've never really done that with another person.  My mum usually just snaps away to get poses and candid shots.  But this was different.  I had to stage two people, not just myself.  I like to pretend that we are walking up to Jay Gatsby's house for one of his wild parties.

It was really nice to have someone else to shoot ideas off of.  Nikkoel came up with the idea to lay across the bench like this.  It turned out really swell.  She had some great input.

My Outfit Details:
vintage 1970s does 1920s dress {eBay}
vintage 1920s hat {Maine}
vintage 1920s handbag {gift}
vintage gloves, vintage jewellery, vintage fur shrug {Grandma Charlotte & Grandma Ruth}
fishnet backseam stockings {k-mart}
heels {thrifted}

We unfortunately ran out of time for taking photos because we had to travel a bit to get to the cinema.  I really wish we could have taken more photos and gotten to other spots on the Homestead.  Hopefully there will be more photoshoots together in the future.  It was so nice to get together with someone else who appreciates past decades and likes to dress up.

I had an amazing day taking photos with Nikkoel and we really enjoyed the film as well.

Style Crush: Zoe Saldana

Since I will be attending the midnight showing of Star Trek Into Darkness, it's only fitting that the beautiful Zoe Saldana is this week's Style Crush.

Zoe has this very appealing girl-next-door vibe to her that works well with her street style and also carries well into her red carpet look.

She can also pull out the sex appeal as seen in this lovely black lace back dress.  It's so swoon-worthy!  I'd love to have this.

Zoe has a tall, lean frame that can pull off structured pieces like this gown above.  She can also wear demure pastel looks.  The outfit below is most certainly something I would wear.

Her hair looks so amazing in this backroll with the jewellery accents.  It seems Zoe can pull off any hairstyle whether it be long, short, curly, straight, an up-do...

This green beaded gown is absolutely to die for!  I love the colour and the simplicity of the silhouette.  It looks incredible on her.

Here Zoe is at a premiere for Star Trek.  She has the ability to pull off vibrant colours as well as more calm blush tones.  Zoe has an impeccable style that always remains classy with the right touch of sensuousness.

I am so excited to see the new film tonight.  They are doing a double feature so we get to see the first one in cinemas again followed up by Into Darkness.  I have a feeling my expectations will be exceeded and that I will be swooning over Benedict Cumberbatch (even if he's the baddie) along with the other handsome Star Fleet men.

My Week According to Instagram

Happy Mother's Day to all you mummies out there (even mummies to pets)!  Today I got to spend the day with my mum, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew.  Mum and I went to church as usual and spent a bit of the early afternoon together.  Then we went over to my brother's house and spent time with his wife and son while waiting for him to come home from work.  We ate dinner at a local chicken restaurant and had a good time, until my nephew got cranky because he couldn't go miniature golfing.

Yesterday I got to hang out with my best friend Michelle whom I don't get to see as often as I'd like.  We live close to an hour apart, which isn't too terrible, but it does hamper getting together at times.  We spent the day walking around Lititz, which is a really beautiful area.  It's got loads of old historic buildings along the streets and also a bunch of sweet little boutiques and shops.

1-2. I am in love with last Sunday's 1930s inspired outfit.
3-4. Another photoshoot at the train tracks.  This is becoming a regular spot for me.

5. Last week's Instagram post.
6-7. Outfit for running errands.
8. Photoshoot by the cherry blossoms again.

9. Tested out my flapper outfit to go see The Great Gatsby.
10. A close up of my beautiful 1920s cloche hat.
11. 1920s shoes. I want them all!
12. A gorgeous couple from the 20s.

13. A sweet shot of my sweet Smudger.
14. Hmm...which to wear when I go see Star Trek Into Darkness...
15. Benedict Cumberbatch was on a fair amount of talk shows!
16. Carey Mulligan was this week's Style Crush.

17. Shared this blog post on Instagram.
18. My great-grandparents in March of 1920.
19. My great-grandmother on the far right in the 1920s.
20. Shared this post on Instagram.

21. There's just something tasty about British villains.
22. I cannot wait to see (Benedict in) Star Trek Into Darkness.
23-24. I couldn't pass up the photo-op by this caboose built in 1942.

25. I should have bought these cute cat-eye glasses.
26-27. The bedroom display at The Curiosity Shoppe is incredible.
28. Michelle and I couldn't pass up the chance to pose in these extravagant vintage hats.

29. We should have been hat models.
30. Oh no! The Enterprise is crashing!

It was really going into the different shops and looking at all the gorgeous vintage items (and lusting over a lot of them!).  We also tried on glasses and extravagant hats.  We laughed over some ridiculous 1970s clothing including some pretty out there jumpsuits.  Next time I said we will have to try on the craziest outfits we can find and take photos like we did with the hats.

My favourite store we went into by far was The Curiosity Shoppe.  It's loaded with lovely vintage items everywhere.  They've even named the shop's pet birds Fred and Ginger!  This is definitely my type of store.  The owner even told me about some future events because she knows from the last time I was in there (and from my outfit yesterday) that I'm very much into the past.  I hope I'll get to go to the one event in June she mentioned that will have swing dancing and whatnot.  It's only a few days after I am scheduled to get my wisdom teeth out so it will have to depend on how I'm feeling and what the swelling situation is at that time.

How was your weekend?  Did you get to do anything fun?

Sears and Stripes

As you may remember, this was my Easter outfit.  That should give you all a timeline for where I am with my backlogged photos.  I was doing well with catching up to them in the winter months, but now that it's warmer and I'm taking a lot more photos, I'm getting behind again.

If you can't tell from the grey clouds, it was threatening to rain at any moment.  Therefore, we did an impromptu photoshoot outside of the church parking lot.  So please excuse the random houses in the background.  We managed to beat the weather, excepting a few rain drops here and there.

I was so excited that 1) I figured out what this random object that belonged to my Grandma Charlotte was and 2) That I finally got to use it.  If you're wondering, I'm talking about the glove clip that is attached to my handbag.  I discovered it amongst her jewellery and couldn't figure it out.  Then whilst browsing on eBay I came upon one and the light bulb went off.

Outfit Details:
vintage dress, vintage hat, vintage gloves, belt, shoes {thrifted}
handbag, jewellery {gifts}
backseam stockings {eBay}

I am in love with this vintage Sears, Roebuck, and Co. dress.  It was love at first sight when my eyes came upon it at the thrift shop.  I knew I had to have it.  And it fits like a glove.  This dress is going to get many, many wears from me.  This is already my second time wearing this dress on the blog.

Do you have any pieces of clothing that you've fallen in love with immediately?

Ann-Margret Anyone?

The moment I first laid eyes on this dress my mind immediately went to Joan from Mad Men and Ann-Margret.  I thought automatically of a 1960s bombshell.

It's only fitting that I broke out my Grandma Charlotte's sunglasses from that era also.  And why not wear my hair up like Joan and throw on some gloves?

The sweet bow detail on the shoes, though not vintage, I thought was a perfect touch for the look.

I really had fun in this outfit even though I'm more of a 1940s/1950s girl.  I do appreciate a lot of the style from the early-mid 60s but then past that I stop caring for it as much.  Most of the styles on Mad Men currently?  No thank you, I'll pass.

 Outfit Details:
vintage dress, vintage gloves, belt, vintage jewellery {thrifted}
vintage handbag {gift}
vintage sunglasses {belonged to my Grandma Charlotte}
backseam stockings {eBay}

It's hard to think of the 60s when my mind is focused on the 20s and The Great Gatsby.  I definitely want to start integrating more of that style into my wardrobe.
