Style Crush: Zooey Deschanel

It wouldn't be a Style Crush feature without including the kitschy, adorkable Zooey Deschanel.

Style Crushes unite!  Zooey teamed up with previous Style Crush Joseph Gordon-Levitt to make (500) Days of Summer.  I love, love, love this film.  It doesn't have your typical ending, but I still love both actors and their outfits in the film.

How perfect is she in this sepia-toned photo?  I love the photos from this shoot that are all retro-esque.  It completely inspires me to go to the beach and do my own shoot with my grandmother's vintage swimsuit.

She just seems like such a sweet girl next door.  The kind of girl that you'd love to be friends with and go out thrifting.  I love that she ads a touch of whimsy to a lot of her looks and doesn't take herself too seriously.

She even looks completely adorable just out on the street with her hair up and a great pair of sunglasses.  I can't see much of the coat, but what I can see I absolutely love.  And I bet it makes her blue eyes pop when she has the sunglasses off.

I don't know about you, but I'd love to get a peek inside her closet.  I bet there are the most beautiful skirts, blouses, and dresses.  And what about the shoes!?

I know some people don't like Zooey for whatever reason.  They think she's fake or something...  But I love her style.  And not to mention her incredibly sultry singing voice.  It's like something out of the 40s.  She's one talented lady in my book.

Going through all of these photos really makes me nostalgic for when I had the "Zooey bangs".  It's just such a cute look.  But I know if I cut them I'll regret it when it comes to my regular hair styling.  Oh well, I'll just enjoy them on her.

In Which the Wind Ruins My Hair

This past weekend had incredible weather.  It was in the 50s for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  Now today of course to make up for that, it is dreary and rainy.  Oh well.  At least it was a taste of what's to come with spring on its way.

I know I said on the last outfit post that that was one of my favourite outfits.  Well, this is certainly another one.  This skirt has always been a love of mine, but it's the culmination of all the components.  The shoes, (thrifted vintage Salvatore Ferragamo!) have always quickly found a way to my heart.

I'm finally caught up on series three of Downton Abbey.  It only took me until now and renting it from the library.  I missed watching it every Sunday because Once Upon a Time and The Walking Dead are a higher priority for me.  I really love this show and immersing myself into a different time.  And it's always so interesting to see the contrast between the upstairs and downstairs.

I've had this vintage navy velvet hat for quite some time but never wore it.  Well now the poor hat finally had it's time out in the world.  I always ending wearing the same few hats over and over.  There's nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to start wearing the others and also continue to ad to my collection.

Outfit Details:
vintage sweater, vintage brooch {grandmother's}
vintage shoes, vintage hat, vintage skirt, belt {thrifted}
tights {target}
cameo bracelet {handmade}

My hair was looking much nicer this day when I left the house.  If you couldn't tell from my skirt billowing about, it was rather windy when I took the photos.  My poor hair went from pretty and curly to falling and fluffy.  This happens though.  I still love the whole look even with the crazy hair.

My Week According to Instagram

Spring is here!  Well, at least temporarily.  Yesterday and today the temperature is in the high 50s and tomorrow is supposed to be around that also, though with a bit of rain possible.  There's something about when the warmth starts to come that just cheers me up and puts a spring in my step.  I can whip out my favourite styles of clothing and all my favourite shoes.

I've had a pretty good week overall, if you don't count my constant nightmares I endure almost every night.  The latest?  Fighting in WWII, having cancer, having a serial killer after me, and of course zombies.  Monday I spent the evening at my dad's.  We had incredible pizza and watched the latest 007 film, Skyfall.  I already loved Ben Whishaw, but after seeing him as Q, it just developed more.  I really could go for watching that again.

Yesterday I switched things up and took outfit photos at the Milcreek Wildlife Sanctuary.  My normal location was otherwise occupied so I went there instead.  I saw the beautiful white snow geese in the water.  It looked like hundreds of white swans from the distance.

This afternoon my mum and I might take her three doggies to Blue Marsh.  For those of you (probably all), Blue Marsh is a huge lake area with beaches, hiking trails, and lots of places for boating.  It's a beautiful area and the dogs love running through the woods and swimming in the water.  I'll also be taking more photos this afternoon, before the hiking since I'll have to change my clothes if we go.  I just love this warm weather!  It cheers me up so much and I really have been needing a good cheering up.

What have your plans been like for this glorious weekend?

Petals and Plaid

I've mixed patterns before but nothing so blatant as this combination before.  And it just so turned out to be a top look for me.  Something about the floral top with the plaid skirt just really appeals to me.

This 1930s fur trimmed jacket was a gift from a neighbor.  This is the first time it's appearing in the blog (besides via Instagram) and I am in love with it.  It fit really well to balance the look out.  I can't wait to wear it more in the next few transitional months.  It's slowly turning to spring here, though by the looks of Wednesday's snowfall it doesn't seem that way yet.

You wouldn't know it to look at it, but this skirt's original hemline went down past the knees with several inches of fringe hanging to about mid-calf.  I was almost turned off by that upon first glance but then I thought to myself what an easy thing that is to fix.  It definitely helped with the pattern as a guide to hem a straight line.  I ended up making it a little shorter than I actually wanted, but it works as a more mod-1960s piece.

There's just something about back seam stockings that makes a girl feel ultra sexy.  Or at least, they do that for me.  I was having a very good hair day starting off, but once we get to the last few photos you can see how much the curls fell out.  It was incredibly windy this day and my hair certainly paid the price.

The only bad thing about the length of the skirt (besides it not being on purpose...) when I sit down it's a bit scandalous.  Not anything too crazy, but as you can see below, the tops of my stockings and the straps to my garter belt are visible.  So I certainly have to be careful whilst sitting in this skirt.

Here's a feature to the Conrad Weiser Homestead that I don't show off too often: the gazebo.  It's in a totally different area of the park than I usually shoot at.  But on the way out of the park, I decided to stop and shoot a few photos.  They actually offer you the option of holding weddings and events here, which I think is pretty neat.  It would be gorgeous to have the old stone buildings as a backdrop for your wedding party.

This little bridge is an area I haven't shown yet.  It appears right after the one entrance to the Homestead.  There's nothing too beautiful surrounding it during the winter, but I love the look of the aged stone.  It's definitely going to look more spectacular once there's green on the branches come springtime.

Outfit Details:
vintage skirt, vintage blouse, belt {thrifted}
1930s jacket, vintage Etienne Aigner clutch, oxford booties {gifted}
back seam thigh high stockings {eBay}
vintage cameo brooch {paternal grandmother}

Tuesday was really nice temperature-wise, then Wednesday it snowed, now this weekend they're calling for temperatures in the high 50s.  The fluctuation is insanity.  But I won't complain if it actually gets that warm.  Here's hoping, because I want to try out my new camera and tripod.

Vintage Is Vogue

I recently received an email from Kaki, Fashion Coordinator at Warby Parker.  It turns out she's a fan of my blog and she asked me to share with you some information about vintage fashion.  Which if you've seen my blog, you know I adore!

Here is what Kaki has to say:

 "Vintage Is Vogue

Every so often in the fashion industry, vintage fashion make a comeback. This year, vintage styles are all the rage. From vintage clothing and accessories to glam Hollywood vintage lifestyles and home décor, you can live it up in the 21st century as though you had stepped back into the first half of the 20th century without losing any modern conveniences in the process.

Vintage Clothing

Vintage styles have taken the catwalk by storm. If you love the look and charm of Audrey Hepburn, now is the time to model her fashion sense. She almost always wore chic black and white numbers, and her attire in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” catapulted the little black dress to the pinnacle of classic fashion. On more casual days, take a tip from Audrey by donning a pair of black skinny trousers and a fitted button-down top.

Vintage Accessories

In addition to vintage neck scarves, today’s fashions feature several vintage accessories. Pair a pearl necklace with your little black dress for a vintage look sure to turn heads. Add a little more panache with an antique brooch. Kitten heels, which Audrey particularly loved, can take a casual look and dress it up. Don’t forget to add a pair of marble sunglasses to complete your look. You can find large, round styles reminiscent of the times in Warby Parker’s Hayworth collection.

Vintage Lifestyle

Going vintage doesn’t have to stop with your personal appearance. The grace and glamour of an art deco lifestyle can surround you in your home as well. The clean lines and sweeping curves of elegant home décor inspired by such movies as “My Fair Lady” feature elegantly in the top home designs of 2013. Replace the overstuffed look with furniture that features straight lines or clean curves. For an inexpensive room makeover, replace a heavy coffee table and end pieces with 20th-century modern pieces featuring open design. Embrace bright colors, and get rid of complex pieces or puddles of fabric in favor of long, lean looks.

There’s no need to go back in time to experience the glamour and elegance of yesteryear. Today’s fashion features vintage looks alongside a modern lifestyle, and you can truly have it all."

After looking at the Warby Parker website, I had a visual love affair with many different pairs of glasses/sunglasses.  I don't wear corrective lenses, but if I did, here are a few of my top contenders.

It was much more difficult for me to narrow down my top three favourite pairs of sunglasses on their site, since these are something I could actually wear.

Every girl needs a perfect pair of sunnies to tie together their look.  They can completely transform the most casual look to effortlessly chic like Michelle Williams in yesterday's Style Crush post.  Or they can vamp up an already glamorous look and turn you into an old Hollywood starlet.
