Chanelling Joan Holloway

I felt very 1960's in this outfit, so I went all out by using my vintage 1960's Polaroid camera as a prop.  My mum purchased it for me at a yard sale as a surprise.  I have no idea if it works.  I'd love to find some old film and test it out.  That would be really swell if it was still in working order.

The day these photos were taken, my mum and I were going on a sort of scavenger hunt to look for a costume to rent for the Renaissance Faire.  We checked out a few different locations and I found one that I liked a lot to reserve.  Even better then, my mum was at our local Salvation Army the one day and found a perfect Renaissance gown in the costumes section there.  I paid half the price I would have to rent one, plus I'll get to have it to wear again.

vintage handbag, locket {from my grandmothers}
wedge shoes {eBay}
bracelet {Avon, gifted}

I felt very Mad Men in this.  I was going to do my hair up like Joan does, but I'm not very practiced in the beehive.  So instead, I just opted for a messy/cascading curls sort of 'do.  I've recently just started branching out into the 1960s more so.  I've mainly focused my wardrobe on the 1940s and 1950s.  I'd like to definitely try to go a little earlier and get some 1920s and 1930s pieces.  I have a lovely 1920s hat, but it's too snug on my head, so it's just a decorative piece.  I also have a darling little beaded 1920s clutch, but I don't use that too often either.  I'd really love to get some articles of clothing from those decades to add to my growing collection.

P.S. Gingers can wear ginger!

Living History

Woohoo!  I actually remember what happened the day these photos were taken!

As you probably have noticed by now, I take almost all of my photos in the same place- The Conrad Weiser Homestead.  It has gorgeous land with a pond, lots of various tress, and stunning old buildings.  Besides just taking photos, my mum and I went there that day for the Living History event they had.

Most of the year, the buildings aren't open to the public due to financing and other issues.  But this day we were able to go in and explore.  They had guides dressed up in period costume that toured the grounds with us and explained the history of Conrad Weiser and the time period.  There were also women who were in wondrous garb (though it was just common every day wear, it was still lovely) that were sewing, using a loom, and making baskets.  There was also an Indian there with authentic weaponry who explained the part the Indians had in this area.

blouse {too old to remember}
peep-toe wedges {payless}
vintage jewelery {from my grandmother}
satchel handbag {eBay}

It all was really quite fascinating.  I remembered some of the history from when I was younger but I didn't know most of it.  I'm glad we were able to attend and it's really swell how it's free to the public.

Forties Fever

I almost always dress vintage on my days off.  But the day I wore this outfit, for some reason, I felt like going completely all out.  I put the hat on; I did a back roll and pin curls in my hair; I wore gloves; I had on thigh high back seam stockings and a garter belt; I wore a vintage slip underneath the dress...  Like I said, all out.  I don't know what it was about that day, but the urge just came over me.

I think now that we are transitioning into cooler days here in Pennsylvania, that I might go all out a bit more just with the layering.  I'm going to be wearing stockings and hats more.  Then once it becomes even cooler, I'll break out the gloves.  I only have a few pairs of vintage gloves that are thick enough for the colder weather; the rest are just the thinner ones that won't help keep out the bite of coldness.  I must acquire a few more pairs for the Winter months ahead.

I did finally purchase three pairs of thicker stockings as well: heather grey, navy, and black.  The navy and black are even the cable knit sweater kind- exactly what I wanted!  Now I just want to find an oatmeal colour and I think I'll be set for the sweater kind.  But I do also want to get opaque tights in various bright colours; the only pair I have now is a sort of rust colour which is perfect for Autumn.

What are staple pieces that you must have for your Fall and Winter wardrobes?

Polka Dot Pretty

Yesterday was my first day back to work after being out sick for nine days.  I'm still nowhere near 100% so I was rather anxious.  The only good part was that I got to sit in a one to one with a patient (this is done for patient safety reasons sometimes).  But even with that, I was still completely wiped out from the exertion of having to interact and speak with people.  My chest hurt so much that I wonder if I might have walking pneumonia...  I'm really nervous about going back this afternoon since I probably won't be sitting and will have a regular assignment.  It's going to wear me out even more and I will be taking more than I did last night; which will result in my chest hurting even more.

I love the pop of turquoise in the earrings and shoes against the red of the dress.  Even though red is itself a vibrant colour, since I was wearing it all over here, I used it more so as a neutral.  I kept the belt a basic black as to not overwhelm the look but then added the pops of colour at the top and bottom of my outfit.

Sucker for Seersucker

Wow, it seems as if I took these photos years ago.  It's hard to think of Summer in full bloom when we are making our way into Fall.  I really am so behind on posting photos, that it's not even remotely funny.  I hate that I have all of these photos yet I have nothing to say about them in regards to what happened to me around the time I took them.

In case you didn't read yesterday's post, I got really sick last week and I just couldn't be bothered to get on the computer and post.  This past week would have been perfect to catch up on blogging, but I spent most of my week laying horizontal with my remote stuck in my hand.

There's something I especially love about this outfit.  I don't think it's any one certain piece, but more so a combination of it all.  The whole look just screams warm weather and sunshine.  It's comforting to look back on it, even though I'm wrapped up in a blanket whilst typing this, and remember that it will be warm again soon enough.  I am very excited about the cold weather, though not right at this moment since getting sick comes with this time of year.  But I am happy about bringing out the knit stockings, hats, and gloves.
